Growth

Written on :

"Wow, your baby now weighs 10kg" I remember hearing these words from a nurse and feeling so proud. ''My baby was growing'' I looked forward to hospital routine checks. That's when I knew how my baby had grown compared to the previous routine check. It was always heartening to know all the milk and TLC had led to physical growth . However, over time, knowing my baby's new weight wasn't much of a big deal anymore. It was expected. One of the fundamental characteristics of a living thing is growth. So, my idea of growth as a mother was ensuring I fed my children with healthy food so they would keep growing. I still do that. However, now that they can read, I'm very conscious of ensuring they read to grow. In this case, growth is defined by expanding their minds to learn about life, math and language. Recently, I became aware to new way to grow; doing to grow. I noticed it with my children. I'm very  particular about bring up independent children so I encourage them to do things on their own as much as I can. Simple things like making a breakfast sandwich or folding up laundry. and I've seen them grow into these tasks when they do it repeatedly. They become better and eventually start doing more complex things like mopping the living room and cleaning up after themselves. Ok, please don't think I put my children through manual labour. I just follow the montessori way...Lol But I'm sure you get the point. Personally, when I started writing and sharing my thoughts on my website, it always seemed like a chore But I continued to do it every week even when I wasn't so pleased with my writing and I keep getting better at it. 'Doing to grow'' separates those who actually become really good at what they do from those who don't.
