What I did right and wrong before I resigned from my 9-5 job

Written on :

Last month I put up a post on Instagram on how I transitioned from my 9-5 job into entrepreneurship and I got quite a number of questions on how I managed the transition So, here goes To be honest, I had absolutely no plan to become an entrepreneur ever It was never a fairy tale dream for me. I deeply admired those who ventured out and stuck with it but I had my career path to the CEO office all worked out When I closed my eyes, all I saw was the CEO office in all of it's dripping glory but I guess that was all in my head Looking back now, It's interesting how my life has evolved on a very different wavelength While I didnt have my sight on becoming an entrepreneur, what I did have as a goal was financial independence. I had made all the money mistakes and I wanted to do better with my money which led me to co-founding an investment club and learning all I could about putting money to work Someone asked me why I stepped out of a pretty comfortable job to do what I do now in Abuja and it dawned on me how much I had really evolved. If I were to give a score on previous job I would score it an 8 on a scale of 10 for being challenging I was responsible for 4 consumer-driven tech products I had to build from concept to launch. I owned the budget and balance sheet for these products which cumulatively were projected to earn at least N50-100m on an annual basis. My role as a product manager stretched me as I had to learn how to manage multiple stakeholders; my team of analysts, my direct boss, external partners, IT developers and in-house administration. I had to paint this picture to show how I really had no plans to leave my job. I loved how it challenged me and made me learn something new everyday While some people dream about starting a business, I didn't because I knew first hand how tough it is build a sustainable business. But I found myself stepping out, not by plan, but in response to my circumstances at that time. I decided to share my lessons to help those who plan to step out and maybe those who didn't plan to but don't want to go back to working 9-5 and because of that feel stuck in the middle What did I do right? I had a source of income before I stepped out. I didn't step out without a plan. I stepped out with two contracts that would continue to pay me income. However, I quickly learned I was still trading time for money so I actively sought how to build products that did not depend on my time. Second thing I did right was I evolved through the process   What did I do wrong?
