What successful people do that makes them achieve big goals

Written on :

If there is one issue I believe, strongly plagues Africa,it's the inadequate use of our imagination to create a better environment for ourselves;

The use of our imagination to create innovative solutions for issues peculiar to our environment.

I have studied successful leaders such as Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Richard Branson, Howard Scultz, Aliko Dangote and something common to all of these leaders struck me. They have Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs) A BHAG is a clear compelling vision statement which is audacious, likely to be externally questionable, but not internally regarded as impossible. The term was made popular James Collins and Jerry Poras in the 1994 book entitled Built to last: Successful habits of visionary companies. Guess what? It can be applied to a personal vision statement too. Now, if you did the exercise on writing your vision in my previous post. I applaud you, if you didn’t, you should, just click here. So, let’s take a step back and do some evaluation, shall we? I need you to review what you scribbled down in every vision category and ask yourself the following questions: Is my vision big?  I.e. Is it beyond me? Is my vision hairy? i.e. will it need big balls? (no pun intended) Is it audacious? i.e. will i need to take bold steps? Does it solve a problem or give to society? i.e. will the society benefit from your vision? Now, it’s ok to have a vision  for your personal life, family etc. but please step out of that me-myself-and-i selfish thinking and add a vision to your notes that changes society. A vision that leaves a mark and makes an impact on the society. It's time we go beyond wanting cars, houses, more money etc. Now, don't get me wrong, those things are all nice to have but i think it's time to take a step beyond basic needs to create a vision that gives back to society. What's amazing is you actually get to meet your basic needs when you have a vision that contributes to growth in the society. Bill gates dared to dream of a world where everyone could use the computer easily and as a result is consistently on the list of the richest men in the world. Mark Zuckerberg dared to build a social platform that connects over 1 billion people and is worth $42bn (Forbes) Jeff Bezos dared to build the largest e-commerce site on the planet, Amazon, and ranks 15 on the Forbes list of billionaires.. Buhari dared to believe he could become president of Nigeria and kept on trying even after failing to achieve it three times. You should reevaluate your vision and think of a specific way you can give back and contribute to growth in the society. Like I wrote in my earlier post, don’t focus on the HOW just yet. Just think about the WHAT.  WHAT can you contribute to society and leave as a legacy? That's a very important point. You should read it again In my next post, I show you how to build a vision board. A vision board  helps you keep your vision constantly in your line of sight. click here to find out how. Stay remarkable! Tomie
